The Essential Checklist for Starting a Business in South Africa (2026)

Quick answer: Starting a business in South Africa means eight registrations in the right order: choose a name, register with CIPC, activate SARS, open a bank account, then add VAT, PAYE, UIF and COIDA as you grow. This checklist covers every step with costs.

Most failed startups were not bad ideas – they were good ideas buried under missed registrations. This checklist puts every step in the right order, so nothing bounces back later. Bookmark it, work through it, and tick items off as you go.

The steps people forget (until it hurts)

Annual returns: your company owes CIPC a return every year from its first anniversary – diarise it with our deadline calculator. Beneficial ownership: file it or your first annual return gets blocked – R300 via Admin Boss. Invoicing: get paid properly from day one with InvoiceBoss, the free invoicing app from Admin Boss built for South African small businesses. And if you are still weighing up structures, read why correct registration matters first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the first step to starting a business in South Africa?

Choose your business structure and register it. For most entrepreneurs that means registering a private company (Pty) Ltd with CIPC, which Admin Boss does for R275 including name reservation.

Do I have to register with SARS when I start a business?

Your company gets an income tax number automatically through CIPC, but you must still activate eFiling, appoint a public officer, and add VAT, PAYE or UIF registrations when they apply to you.

Do I need UIF and COIDA registration?

If you employ anyone – even one person – you must register for UIF with the Department of Employment and Labour and for COIDA (workman’s compensation). Admin Boss registers employers for UIF from R450 and COIDA from R350.

How much does it cost to start a business properly in South Africa?

A compliant basic setup – company registration, name reservation and tax number – costs R275 through Admin Boss. Add public officer (R350), VAT (R850) or employer registrations only when your business actually needs them.

Can I start a business while employed elsewhere?

Yes, registering a company takes no physical presence and can run alongside a job. Check your employment contract for restraint clauses, and remember the company’s tax affairs are separate from your personal tax.
